Can AI build a website for my business?

Yes, we are at a point where AI can produce truly impressive results. Assuming you have access to the top-tier AI models, the question isn’t about AI not being able to do what you want, because the top tier ones usually do amazingly when you ask them to. But do you know what to ask them?

If you don’t give them sufficient information, they may make assumptions about your needs, whereas a human will likely ask you or do their own research to find what's appropriate instead of relying on patterns like AI models. AI models rely on patterns, when you don’t give them enough information they replace the gaps with the patterns they learnt during their training, a human can make unconventional decisions if your business needs it while an AI needs to be specifically asked to break out of its pattern (even then there are some patterns).

AI models will do as you say even if it means the website is inefficient, insecure, or unnecessarily complicated. If you want something that is clearly a bad UX (user experience) decision a good human developer will tell you why it's bad but the AI will simply do it.

The AI models you have access to are the same models a developer has access to. Who can produce a better outcome using AI, someone without experience making a website or someone with knowledge of how a website works and prior experience building websites?

What I mentioned above assumes AI models don’t make mistakes. In real life they do make mistakes, the frequency of the mistakes can be reduced by keeping the prompts scoped to one problem but even then it sometimes makes mistakes. For broader prompts they can get you very far, but you need to make minor fixes to get the desired outcome.

You may think if it looks good it's enough, but there may be bugs related to accessibility, performance, SEO, or in some edge cases. There are automated tests you can run to reduce errors made by AI, but it may not be enough. It's important to have someone with knowledge of the web to validate AI generated code.

Having said all of that, if you are comfortable learning, spending time working with AI you can get amazing results just by using AI. The online rage bait world may want you to think you are doomed if you use AI, but AI can truly produce great results if you know how to use it.
